Help us raise £230,000 to invest in the future of the Community Sauna Baths

Over the past four years, Community Sauna Baths has grown from a grassroots experiment into a citywide movement. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, we’ve welcomed hundreds of thousands of bathers, built community across London and partnered with the NHS and charities to deliver free sessions - offering rest and recovery as a public good.

What’s Happening?

We’re launching a £230,000 community fundraiser over the next 8 weeks, running from 1 Aug - 1 Oct.
Your support will allow us to:

1. Secure the Lease
at 80 Eastway, Hackney

After years as short-term tenants, we are now working with Hackney Council & Civic State to secure the lease of our flagship site. Taking the lease has come with unforeseen survey costs and subsequent essential repairs including the hall and kitchen. This is a great opportunity to give Hackney Wick a permanent home.

2. Invest in Infrastructure

From Hackney to Peckham, our sites need much needed love - including toilets, electrical work and drainage. We’re also setting aside £25,000 to invest in Glengall Wharf Community Garden to support this great community hub.

3. Expand Our Outreach & Social Prescribing Programme

We run on a low-margin, high-volume model to keep prices accessible while giving a minimum of 5% of our revenue to our community programmes. This fundraiser will help us expand our community free sessions programme into Camberwell and Walthamstow.

Why Have We Chosen to Fundraise?

Most growing businesses would cover these expanding costs through bank loans or investments, but as a Community Interest Company (CIC), we don’t have shareholders or external investors.

Instead, we rely on our community and customers, staying true to our values of collective ownership and public benefit.

We’ve already funded previous expansion through pre-sales and
self-financing, without debt or equity investment.

This fundraiser is not about rescuing something that’s failing, it’s about investing in something that’s growing.

Offered over 7,000 free sessions to NHS workers.

Provided 240 free sessions per month to socially prescribed community members via NHS & charities.
Offered over 1 million affordable sauna sessions.
Cultivated spaces of warmth, belonging and connection in five neighbourhoods.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about preserving something rare: a public good rooted in joy, care, and community ownership.

Living in cities, we’re often cut off from nature, each other, and even ourselves - distracted, over-stimulated, and disconnected. The sauna offers something different: a moment of stillness, without screens or noise. It strips away status, expectation, and judgement, creating space for real human connection to emerge.

In fact, a major study across 148 research papers found that strong social bonds can reduce the risk of early mortality by up to 50% - making connection as important to our health as giving up smoking or staying active. It's a reminder that connection isn’t a luxury, it’s vital to our health and happiness.

The sauna creates the perfect conditions for this kind of connection to thrive.
